Would You Wait for Me Page 5

“Daxson Chase Anders, you will do no such thing,” his mom ordered. “Even if I want to as well. We’ll have them answer for this, just let me take care of it.”

“Okay, Mama.” Dax rejoined them. “But if he shows up here all bets are off.”

Dean looked between them both and almost chuckled. It meant a lot that they wanted to protect him. Dax was always fighting for him, and he was lucky to have them both. “He won’t. They’re glad I’m gone.”

“Their loss. You belong here anyway,” Dax said with a grin. “You always fit better here.”

“It’s true, I’ve always had two sons.” Mama Beth kissed his forehead. “I love you, Dean. Just the way you are. It don’t matter one bit that you’re gay—you’re still family and always will be.”

  “Mama’s right.”

Dean nodded. “I love you too, Mama. I’m glad I’m home now.” A few tears fell and a weight felt as if it was lifted. Dax and his mom still loved him, they hadn’t rejected him or kicked him out. They were giving him a home, a new start. A better one. And suddenly he felt hopeful again, the ground a little less shaky.

Dax and Mama Beth had taken him in that day, and he’d become part of the family. He’d lived with them until he’d gone to college to get his teaching degree while Dax had gone into basic training. Dean had gotten a job as an English teacher at the middle school just last year right before Dax had gone on his second deployment. They’d had a hell of a celebration, for Dean’s dream job and Dax popping the question to Jessie. Everything had been good, until now. He should go to Beth’s, he wanted to be with his mama. She had to be devastated and Dax would have kicked his ass for what he had done—he had lost it and she had to be wondering what had happened and why the call had ended. They’d definitely need each other to get through this.

Except he didn’t even want to move. He just stared up at the sky. “Damn you, Dax, I told you to be careful! How the hell am I supposed to do this without you?”

It was a few more minutes but he forced himself to move. Mama needed him. He’d run some more, right to her house. Hopefully he’d get himself under control so he could be strong and take care of her. That’s what Dax would want and he had made him a promise.
